The Tour

Our aim is to inspire you creatively, inform you technically and share our knowledge with you on how to create the best shot possible using your equipment and techniques to maximise best use of the light. Our enthusiasm, creativity and technical knowledge will leave you feeling as though you’ve achieved the best shots you possibly can.

As well as providing you, the photographer with creative and technical advice, our Tour Leader will be on hand to help your partner/friend have a good time too by recommending activities to keep them entertained.

At least one meal per day is included and where meals are at a venue of your choice, our Tour Leaders will advise you on the best places to go in the local area.

Itinerary

DAY 1 – Arrival - Delhi

Accommodation: The Claridges

We will collect you from Delhi International airport and take you to the hotel. Check in time is after midday.

Lunch: Venue of your choice

There will be an introductory meeting during the early evening (once all the tour guests have arrived) in the hotel, when the Photo Mentor will give you details on the tour. This will be followed by dinner at the hotel.

DAY 2 – Delhi

Delhi is an eclectic city of medieval and modern cultures living side by side. During the morning we will be visiting the medieval Jama Mosque, followed by a walking and cycle rickshaw tour of the traditional businesses of Old Delhi, exploring ancient arts and crafts businesses. We will visit an old fashioned perfume shop and stroll through the main bridal street of Old Delhi, Kinari Bazaar, with its display of embroidered silk wedding sarees and colourful turbans for the bridegroom. There’s the opportunity to visit the spice market – Khari Baoli, where dealers have traded for more than 150 years. The smell of the spices will linger with you long after you’ve left the market.

During the afternoon, we will visit Humayun’s Tomb, a finely proportioned red sandstone and marble structure, which served later as a model for the Taj Mahal. We will also take in the Qutab Minar, one of Delhi’s most famous landmarks, India Gate, the President’s House (Rashtrapati Bhawan) and Parliament House.

DAY 3 – Delhi - Leh

An early morning transfer to the airport to take a domestic flight to Leh. The rest of the day will be spent at your leisure in order to acclimatise to the high altitude. The hotel is situated on the western edge of the Tibetan Plateau. The landscape has been sculptured into a spectacular shape by the wind and erosion over the years. The altitude ranges from 9,000 to 25,000 feet.

During the evening we will visit the Shanti Stupa, a magnificent white domed structure which offers spectacular views. The aim behind the construction of the stupa (a dome shaped building erected as a Buddhist shrine) was to commemorate 2,500 years of Buddhism and promote world peace. We will then head to the local market place to explore.

DAY 4 – Leh

After a leisurely morning, we will drive to visit the monasteries of Shey, including the palace, once the residence of the royal family and home to a gold plated, 7.5 metre high copper statue of Buddha; the largest of its kind.

Lunch: Venue of your choice

We will continue our journey to Stok Village, home to the Stok palace and museum, which contains an intriguing collection of Buddhist art, weapons, jewellery and artefacts including thangkas (a Tibetan Buddhist painting on cotton or silk) and the ceremonial headdresses of the rulers of Ladakh (Peraks). There’s the chance to walk around the beautiful village and interact with the locals.

A lecture on Buddhism by a Senior Monk – khenpo. (optional)

DAY 5 – Leh

Accommodation: Spic-n-Span hotel

We will take an early trip to Thiksey Monastery to participate in morning prayers. Thiksey is one of the largest and architecturally most impressive gompas, (Tibetan monastery or temple) containing exquisite images, stupas and Buddha wall paintings.

We will visit Hemis Monastery, the wealthiest, most well known and biggest gompa in Ladakh.

DAY 6 – Leh – Lamayuru - Uley

Accommodation: Ule Ethnic Resort – cottage

Breakfast: At the hotel

Today we will be driven (2 hours) through the jagged snow capped mountains that are the backdrop of the Ridzong and Lamayuru Monasteries, which house approximately 150 Buddhist monks and a very rich collection of thangkas (Tibetan Buddhist painting on cotton, or silk appliqué) and wall paintings. We will also visit the Thardot Choeling Nunnery, where 23 nuns reside and we will learn more about their lifestyle.

DAY 7 – Uley - Leh

Breakfast: At the Resort

Today we will make our way back to Leh via the Alchi, Likir and Basgo Monasteries. The Alchi Gompa is situated on the banks of the Indus and one of the oldest standing monasteries in Ladakh, built in the 11th Century. It is no longer active, but is looked after by the monks from the Likir Monastery. Basgo is an ancient citadel complex and is located in a dramatic landscape.

We will arrive back in Leh by early evening and the rest of the evening is yours at your leisure.

DAY 8 – Leh - Nubra

Accommodation: Desert Himalaya Resort – luxury tent

Breakfast: At the hotel

Today we will drive (5 hours) to Nubra via Khardungla, the highest motor pass in the world at 5602 metres.

You will spend the afternoon at your leisure

The evening will be spent at the sand dunes at Hundar where there’s the option to take a ride on the double humped Bactrian camel.

DAY 9 – Nubra

Accommodation: Desert Himalaya Resort – luxury tent

Breakfast: At the Resort

Today we will visit Diskit and Samstangling Monasteries. Diskit Monastery is the oldest and largest Buddhist monastery in the Nubra Valley of Ladakh. It was founded in the 14th Century and belongs to the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Samstrangling Gompa has six chambers and the walls feature 35 Buddhas of confession and 16 Abbots. There are 100 resident monks including 40 novice monks.

DAY 10 – Nubra - Leh

We will drive back to Leh (5 hours) via Khardungla

During the early evening you will meet with a local Tibetan shaman or a medicine man (TBC)

DAY 11 – Leh – Pangong Lake - Leh

Accommodation: Spic-n-Span hotel

Breakfast: At the hotel

A day excursion (5 hours one way) to Pangong Lake via Chang La – 3rd highest motor pass in the world. The lake is a vast area of water, 5 – 6km wide and separates India and China. The Change-chenmo range of mountains provides a spectacular backdrop to the lake.

DAY 12 – Leh – Delhi

Transfer to the airport to take a domestic flight to Delhi.

In the afternoon, we will take a tour of Delhi to include Dilli Haat, an open air food plaza and craft bazaar.  This is a permanent market place which is based on 6 acres of land and with small thatched roof cottages and kiosks, the plaza has a village atmosphere.

Dinner:  Farewell dinner

DAY 13 – Departure

Breakfast and departure to the airport (checkout time 12 noon).
